twenty-one, eighty eight

I wasn’t allowed to date until I turned 16. Why 16 was the magical number to my mom, I will never know, but my sister wasn’t either. My brother wasn’t allowed to either.

Call me old fashioned, call me crazy, call me naive, call me whatever, but I think if parents set limits on their kids when they can and cannot do things, it would save a lot of heartache, especially for young girls.

Girls struggle so much with wanting to be loved and to be accepted and to be wanted and pursued..and dating in high school and middle school just makes it worse. My best friend has always struggled with it. And to an extent yes, I have struggled with it as well…but nothing near like what I saw the girls my in high school deal with. Constantly talking about guys, constantly talking about what they think of them, changing who they are as a person to be more like the type of girl this guy liked or that guy.

It’s such a vicious cycle. If parents set a dating age limit for their kids I think it could be relieved a bit…along with positive reinforcement and and talks of why they set it. Why it’s important and why they want their sons, especially daughters to realize that they don’t have to be in a romantic relationship to be worth anything..

Just a thought that crossed my mind.

It’s such a tragic story. I remember myself in her exact same position. Not at thirteen years old, a little older, but as each generation goes on, troubles are passed down and start earlier. I did the exact same thing she did. I was really stupid and made a dumb decision, for a guy who really didn’t care. But I wonder, what was going on that helped me to not be so affected by boys? I wanted guys to like me, of course, but I think it’s just my personality to not really care for too long about disappointments…if that even makes sense. I was unusually confident for my age, and I still am, so I don’t get upset over stuff like someone not liking me, or someone saying something bad about me.

I guess I can’t compare myself to her, because I think her situation is a little more intense than mine was.

But anyway. I wish I could be there for girls, to tell them all that they don’t need to do anything like sending pictures like that to a guy. Especially at twelve, thirteen, fourteen years old. It really makes my heart hurt to even think about young women at that age with such low confidence in themselves.

And it really doesn’t help that girls talk about each other so bad. All you hear about is who’s a slut or a whore. Ughhhh. It really makes me sad.

None of this is even making sense. I’m just rambling now. But I just want to be able to talk to each girl and let her know that Jesus loves her, and that she is the most precious person to him. That he says that her life is the most valuable thing in the world.

I sort of wish we were born with the wisdom that comes with experience, so that we know why certain things shouldn’t be done.
